In this episode of EQUUS “Farm Calls,” the topic was electrolytes in horses. Dr. Emily Schaefer discussed what electrolytes are and why they are important to horse health. She said that depending on the environment, the need for electrolytes is usually to replenish loss or make the horse thirsty. “That’s two different reasons to give the same product,” noted Schaefer.

Schaefer is a veterinarian who is boarded in internal medicine. She is a clinical assistant professor of internal medicine at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and is currently a fellow in equine emergency and critical care at The Ohio State University.

In this podcast we also talked about when to give electrolytes to athletes and some tips for replacement. Schaefer helped horse owners understand what electrolytes are and how they can help their horses with proper electrolyte use.

Also, if you give electrolytes due to weather changes, you might want to hear what Schaefer said about weather-related electrolyte treatment.

in addition, she discussed when electrolyte administration is not appropriate.
