January 2, 2010 — Dr. Martin Crabo of Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center in Cave Creek, Ariz., was selected as the grand-prize winner of Purina’s 2009 HOW® Horse Owner’s Workshop Veterinary Sweepstakes. Dr. Crabo won a trip to the 55th Annual American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Convention, held December 5-9, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., courtesy of AAEP. First place prize winner Dr. Jack Easley of Equine Veterinary Practice in Shelbyville, Ky., won a John Deere® Gator, courtesy of John Deere®.
“I always look for opportunities where I can meet and talk with people and share ways to better care for their horses,” said Dr. Crabo. “Every year I’ve participated in a Purina workshop, I’ve always learned something new regarding nutrition. Knowing that Purina puts together a nice local program for horse owners ends up being a win-win situation.”
The Purina HOW® Horse Owner’s Workshop, sponsored in part by EQUUS magazine, is held January through April at approximately 900 Purina dealerships across the country and is the largest grassroots educational workshop in the industry, providing horse owners with up-to-date information on equine nutrition, health and maintenance care, training techniques, the latest horse gear and more. Veterinarians, clinicians, trainers and equine experts gather at the workshop to provide horse owners the opportunity to discuss local topics and health issues that interest them most. Veterinarians who participate in the workshop receive 20 free bags of Premium Purina® Horse Feed and are automatically entered into the HOW® Veterinary Sweepstakes.
“I feel that Purina’s Horse Owner’s Workshop provides a service to horse owners,” said Dr. Easley. “These workshops educate horse owners, which makes them more participatory in their animal’s care. The process does a great deal to increase the welfare of the horse and in turn, it makes the horse owner a more knowledgeable client aware of good horse health care practices.”
