Foundation offers help for horses affected by California wildfires

Veterinarian-governed group reaches out to fellow vets and the horse industry to coordinate assistance, raise funds

As heartbreaking reports emerge about the wildfires in Southern California, equine organizations are rising to the occasion and offering help.

One of them is The Foundation for the Horse, a 501(c)(3) organization governed by equine veterinarians and based in Lexington, Kentucky. In a social media post on January 10, The Foundation stressed that it continues to reach out to veterinarians and the horse industry to help horses affected by these devastating fires. Since igniting on January 7, the powerful blazes have reportedly killed 24 people and roared through 40,000 acres in the Greater Los Angeles area.

“If you or someone you know needs assistance with veterinary care, shelter, transportation, feed, hay or supplies, please contact The Foundation at [email protected],” the post reads. “Assistance is available to veterinarians treating horses affected by the fires and for veterinary medical supplies, treatment, euthanasia and more.”

Disaster relief

According to its website, The Foundation “responds quickly” and “works directly with veterinarians who are members of the American Association of Equine Practitioners to coordinate direct needs when local communities are impacted” by disasters like the California wildfires.

In addition, The Foundation collaborates with and provides grants to institutions and programs that are training veterinarians, veterinary students, first responders and others on how best to manage equine care before and after natural disasters.

To apply for a grant or notify The Foundation of horses in need due to a natural disaster, please call (859) 233-0147 or email [email protected].

As The Foundation’s social media post reminds readers: “To assist in these efforts, donations are needed and can be made directly to our Disaster Fund at https://www.foundationforthehorse.org/…/disaster-relief/.”
