Enhanced security in place for Chincoteague’s 100th Pony Swim

New policies prompted by credible online threat

CHINCOTEAGUE, Viriginia—If you are attending the 100th anniversary commemoration of Chincoteague’s Pony Swim and Auction July 26-August 1, you’re in for a special celebration of a unique and beloved Eastern Shore tradition. A benefit for the island’s volunteer fire company, the annual swim of wild ponies across Assateague Channel, followed by the pony penning and auction, was made famous by Marguerite Henry‘s classic 1947 children’s novel, “Misty of Chincoteague.”

However, in a recent news release, town officials recommended allowing yourself extra time for all the events. Be aware, too, that there will be new restrictions in place. Not only is a record crowd of up to 50,000 expected, “there will be added security screenings for everyone’s safety and enjoyment,” officials explained.

According to reports from multiple local news outlets, the heightened security protocol comes in response to a credible online threat to the 100th Pony Swim that was confirmed by local authorities in a January 17 press conference and is said to be under investigation.

New restrictions

“We are closely monitoring everything to ensure a safe and smooth experience for all,” a post on the town’s website proclaims. Also posted on the town’s website are the following restrictions for those attending this year’s events.

“While we know that these extra measures will cause some minor inconveniences, we want to ensure that your safety is paramount,” town authorities maintain, adding, “We look forward to seeing you at the 100th anniversary celebrations.”
