Prolonged exposure to the sun will not only fade a horse’s coat but can lead to sunburn and other problems. Here are 4 things that can help protect your horse’s skin from the ultraviolet radiation:

1. Sunscreen lotion formulated for horses will protect sensitive skin on the muzzle and around the eyes.

2. Hoods, sheets or other garments can block ultraviolet light and deter insects.

3. Fly spray incorporating sunscreen can be applied to the whole body for general protection.

4. A UV-blocking fly-mask will protect pink skin around the eyes—an area that is prone to developing cancerous growths after exposure to ultraviolet light.
