‘Barn Stories,’ Ep. 99: Love and war

For soldiers far from home, a small, mischievous donkey became a most unexpected blessing

The unforgettable story behind this episode of “Barn Stories” took place on an American Marine base during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The military has rules about keeping a donkey on base, of course. But tell that to “Smoke,” the wee, undernourished donkey found tied to a nearby tree by the camp commandant.

Quickly adopted by the soldiers, he became their beloved “Chief Morale Officer.” After the unit’s deployment, Smoke went on to touch even more lives. Listen to learn more about this remarkable animal.
