- ⎯ Edited Press Release

On October 23, members of the United States Park Police Horse Mounted Unit received a special award at a special horse show. Sponsored by the EQUUS Foundation, the Washington International Horse Show Honor and Service Award was presented by WIHS President Vicki Lowell and EQUUS Foundation President Lynn Coakley. Accepting on behalf of their unit were Sgt. Kenneth Leonas, Officer Sheila O’Sullivan aboard Tedi, and Officer Samara-Jade Mok aboard Funston.
Since its founding in 1934, the unit has been a vital part of the Washington, D.C. community. It has upheld tradition, ensured public safety and protected the nation’s most iconic landmarks. Beginning with one rented horse, it has grown into one of the oldest and most respected police equestrian units in the country. The unit now serves not only Washington, D.C., but New York and San Francisco.
Dedication to community engagement
What sets the USPP Mounted Unit apart is its dedication to community engagement through its unique public education center. Located in Washington, D.C., this center allows visitors to experience the bond between horse and officer. Also showcased is the mounted patrol’s role in national security and heritage preservation.
In addition, the unit offers retired racehorses and show horses a second career in public service. USPP horses are trained to work safely in crowds and challenging environments. Besides being given expert care and training, USPP horses are afforded a dignified retirement.
Demonstrating its spirit of service, the USPP Mounted Unit supported the U.S. Army Caisson Platoon during a time of rebuilding. The shared resources and mentorship helped restore the platoon’s mission readiness.
From daily patrols on the National Mall to their presence at presidential inaugurations, state funerals and national events, the Mounted Unit brings professionalism, dignity and the quiet strength of the horse-human bond to public life.
Honoring a deep connection
Embodying the values of the Washington International Horse Show Honor and Service Award, the USPP Horse Mounted Unit exemplifies more than just public service. It is also a model of horsemanship, education, lifelong equine care and interagency partnership. The unit both continues the legacy and honors the deep connection between horses and service to our nation.
