Hammering home a lesson

Your farrier wants you to keep a hammer in your grooming box—here's why.

Teaching your horse to stand for the farrier may be as simple as keeping a hammer in your grooming box. Many farrier-phobic horses object specifically to the noise and sensation of having shoes hammered on. Keep a hammer with your grooming tools, and each time you pick out your horse’s feet, use it to gently but firmly tap around the perimeter of the shoe as well as on the hoof wall where the nails emerge. Do this during every grooming session and your horse will be much less reactive the next time he has new shoes put on.
