Hagyard’s Duncan Peters Moves to Michigan State Vet School to Head Equine Sports Medicine Program

The following announcement is provided via press release from Michigan State University. Dr. Peters’ name should be familiar to anyone who shows in the hunter-jumper discipline.

Duncan F. Peters, DVM, MS, has been named director of the Clinical Equine Sports Medicine Program and associate professor of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM).

Dr. Peters comes to MSU from Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky. He joined the institute in 2006 as director of their Sport Horse Division and, during his tenure there, developed one of the nation’s strongest private sports horse medical programs.

The Hagyard Institute is one of the world’s oldest and largest equine veterinary practices and is known internationally for its leadership in veterinary medicine. Previously, he helped develop the English sport horse program at Pioneer Equine Hospital, a referral practice in Oakdale, California. He also co-directed their assisted reproduction services.

A leading authority on locomotor pathology, diagnosis, and treatment, Dr. Peters also works on managing sport horse health for optimum performance. He is a multi-discipline licensed Federation Equestrian Internationale (FEI) veterinarian and is FEI-certified in dressage, eventing, jumping, driving, vaulting, and reining.

“The College’s entire equine team is very pleased to welcome Dr. Peters to the MSU community,” said Ray Geor, chairperson of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. “Duncan is an accomplished equine veterinarian with a well-deserved international reputation in sports medicine and I anticipate exciting growth and a new breadth of services in our equine division. The Department and College are grateful to Provost Wilcox and the search committee for making this exciting recruitment possible.”

Dr. Peters will lead the Clinical Equine Sports Medicine Program at MSU CVM. His responsibilities will be divided between clinical work, teaching, and scholarly research.

“This is an exciting move for me,” said Peters. “I’m looking forward to developing the hospital’s equine services and to building collaborations with other groups in the College, including the McPhail Equine Performance Center and the diagnostic imaging group. I see this as an opportunity to build on the College’s existing expertise in teaching and patient care. I look forward to working with my new colleagues.”

A past director of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), Dr. Peters serves on various committees for the association. He speaks regularly at equine veterinary association meetings, is a contributing author to the book Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery, and has published widely in horseowner publications. He serves on the advisory board for The Horse magazine and is a member of the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) Veterinary and Drugs & Medication committees. He is a certified member and board member of the International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP) and a member of the North American Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Association (NAVRMA).
