Horses, Saddles and Riders — Applying the Science: Saddle Research Trust Offers Free Document Download

Researchers Clayton, Dyson, Harris and Bondi Collaborated on Conference Review
A summary of the recent Saddle Research Trust Conference in the United Kingdom is available as a free download through the British Equine Veterinary Association’s Equine Veterinary Education journal. The four researchers who compiled the reported are, in clockwise order from top left, Sue Dyson, Pat Harris, Hilary Clayton and Anne Bondi.

Great Britain’s Saddle Research Trust (SRT) invites readers of The Jurga Report to download the recent publication of a review of the Trust’s International Conference and Research Workshop, held in November 2014. The summary document was published in Equine Veterinary Education (EVE), the official education journal of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA).

Titled Horses, Saddles and Riders – Applying the Science, the document was co-written by four researchers who presented studies at the conference: Professor Hilary Clayton, BVMS, PhD, DACVSMR, MRCVS; Researcher/clinician Sue Dyson, MA, Vet MB, PhD, DEO, FRCVS; Professor Pat Harris, MA, PhD, DipECVCN, VetMB, MRCVS; and SRT Director Anne Bondi, BHSI.

The public event attracted around 400 delegates from many quarters of the equestrian industry, who came to hear the world’s leading veterinary and scientific experts in this area discuss and debate the latest research on saddle-related equine welfare and performance issues.

The conference, which is only the second of its kind ever held, saw vets, saddlers and equine therapists joining professional riders and trainers as well as recreational owners and riders to hear international experts share their vast experience.

A two-day researchers’ workshop followed, where leading scientists in the field of horse, saddle and rider interactions were invited to debate their cutting edge research. The entire event, which was sponsored by World Horse Welfare, the British Equestrian Federation, Amerigo Saddles, Albion Saddlemakers and Horse & Hound magazine, was hailed a highly important step in the sharing of knowledge and expertise for the good of the horse by the sponsors.

By kind permission of the editor of the Equine Veterinary Education, the review of the Saddle Research Trust Conference and Research Workshop has been made freely available. Interested readers may use this direct link for downloads from the charity website: Saddle Research Trust review paper in PDF form. The PDF document may also requested via email: [email protected]

The SRT 3rd International Conference will be held on Saturday December 2, 2017, with the Researchers’ Workshop following on December 3-4. Further details will be published shortly.

About the charity:

The Saddle Research Trust was founded in 2009 to promote the welfare of the ridden horse and to raise awareness of the widely underestimated issues surrounding saddles, equine backs and performance. Trust Director Anne Bondi is currently undertaking a doctoral research program at the University of Sunderland, where she is studying the interaction of horses, saddles and riders. The SRT facilitates collaborations between its research associates and promotes objective scientific research in order to further its aims.
